Ticking bomb: Iran's new crime against the environment

Upper Gotwand Dam is an under construction embankment dam on the Karun River in Arabistan Al Ahwaz (Khuzestan).
Experts say the location of the dam in was poorly chosen since the vast area behind the dam has billions of metric tons of salt. The lake behind the dam will gradually dissolve the salt and will turn it into a salt water lake that will have a devastating effect on the ecosystem of Karun River.
The construction will destroy at least 100 acres fertile farming land and trees in Aqili Plain. Also as the result of the inundation four registered and large number of non-registered pre-Islamic sites and mounds would drown.
