Ahwazi Activist Tortured In Prison

Ghazi Haidari, an industrial engineer, is in an awfully grave and life threatening condition after being severely tortured at an interrogation centre in Ahwaz city. It’s said that this was due to his political and cultural activism in regards to his Ahwazi Arab nationality.

Mr Haidari worked in Maashour in the petrochemicals industry and was responsible for the contracts at a pipeline company in Ahwaz, prior to his arrest in May 2009. He is currently serving a 10 years and 6 months sentence in prison in regards to his study and research into the Ahwazi Arab history. He was also convicted due to his writings on the issue of deprivation and poor economic situation of the Ahwazi Arabs, all of which are regarded as threatening to the Iranian regime and its national security.

During his imprisonment at the notorious Karoon prison, he received both psychological and physical torture and attained two broken ribs. During the past couple of months, he was transferred twice to interrogation centres run by the Ministry of Intelligence where he has been receiving further torture. He was then finally transferred to Shiraz. It is said that Mr Haidari is on the verge of dying due to the condition he is in as a result of the torture he has been facing.

This wanton interrogation of Mr Haidari began as a result of a secretly filmed video, showing four Ahwazi Arabs remonstrating for their innocence and accusing the intelligence services of corruption for forcefully extracting false confessions under torture, was released before their execution. He was accused and convicted for assisting in the filming of the video alongside two other men; Nazem Beraihi (27) and Yahya Naseri (32).

Recently, in Alsusa, Alkhalafia, and Alqunaidara (Dezful), six Ahwazi Arabs died under torture by the Iranian intelligence services. These men were not charged of any crime nor did they commit any, however were still executed, making these killings illegal under both Iranian and international law.
